WHAT IS PEER COUNSELING?
The Adam Center Volunteer Peer Counseling program is available to men age 18 years and above for a variety of relational, spiritual and emotional issues. A man/client meets with a male volunteer peer counselor weekly or bimonthly for one to one sessions at our centrally located office in the center of Hamilton Count, OH. Peer Counseling sessions last approximately 1 hour and continue until the client and Volunteer Peer Counselor agree that they have completed the journey. The expectation is 10 sessions for effectual change.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The peer counseling session is not a “chat” session over coffee or hanging out with a friend. Real change takes place when the client applies the action steps discussed in a session coupled with God’s grace, mercy and love.
Peer counseling moves a man from hopeless, stuck, guilty or grieving to a position of hope, structure, resolve, control and peace. Prayer is offered to but not required of any client.
Action steps are often gently ‘required’. These may involve working through a book study one on one with your volunteer peer counselor. It may be outlining a new way to respond to a certain person or scenario and then taking the hard step of trying it out.
No matter what, we are here through ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ without judgment. Adam Center believes each man has the internal strength to see necessary change, learn what change he has control of, to plan for healing and to move –with support – to that place. We see it happen over and over and over. So much so that many of former clients now have trained to be volunteer peer counselors.
WHO ARE THE VOLUNTEER PEER COUNSELORS?
Our Volunteer Peer Counselors are women who are educationally, denominationally, racially, geographically and experientially diverse. They come from a 14 county region and range in age from 23 – 80 years. They have completed 30 hours of training to understand confidentiality, listening skills, communication, change models, power of prayer, codependency, depression, personality temperaments, and more. He then completes orientation on Adam Center policy and procedure before serving clients as a peer counselor, recovery group leader or study facilitator. Each volunteer has a mentor as well as support from the Executive Director, Director and Board.
